In the valley of the river Boutonne between Chef Boutonne and Brioux sur Boutonne the tiny commune of Luché sur Brioux with its 145 inhabitants lies on the D740. The Commune is primarily agricultural, cereals and goats - 5 goats for each inhabitant.
Situated just behind the Market building is the church of Luché sur Brioux, Roman like so many others in the region and probably constructed in the 10th century. Very simple in style with a gothic entrance, dating from the end of the 15th century.
To the south – on the other side of the D740 from the Market building - is the communal lavoir, crossed by three rivers – the Boutonne, the Sompteuse and the Dauphin. A beautiful spot and well worth a visit.
The Market building has run under the guises of Chez Francis, L’Etoile, 15 or Quinze and has served its community loyally as a shop, bar, restaurant and also as the local hairdresser!
It became very well-known at one point as the best place for fish and chips on a Friday evening!
We hope that The Market can become a meeting place for our two communities. A place of learning and fun where you can enjoy a full English breakfast, a bacon buttie, lunch or cream tea whilst you browse around our different stalls.
